July 23, 2008 – Following the invocation and the Presentation of the Colors, Congressional leaders and dignitaries commemorated President Truman’s executive order 60 years ago that marked the beginning of racial integration in the armed services. They spoke of the contributions of African-Americans to the military and war efforts, and praised President Truman’s leadership. Sergeant William Perry and Captain Spencer Moore of the 92nd Infantry Buffalo Division, the only African-American infantry division to see combat in Europe during WWII, spoke of their experiences before integration and of the changes since then.
