Songs for the Unsung

 “Songs for the Unsung”

A Reminiscence Theatre and Opera Production in Collaboration with Armed Forces Retirement Home Double Nickels Theatre Company & Washington National Opera

Washington, DC, November 1, 2010 – Double Nickels Theatre Company in collaboration with the Armed Forces Retirement Home and Washington National Opera presents “Songs for the Unsung” on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 2:00pm. The performance will take place in the theater located in the Scott Building on the grounds of the historic Armed Forces Retirement Home located at 3700 North Capital Street, NW. The entrance is at Upshur Street and Rock Creek Church Road, NW.

This partnership and free production is a creation of original music by the writers/producers inspired by stories recorded over several months by the retired military veterans residing at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, DC. Songs of these stories are based on the memories of the residents whose life experiences return us to times prior to World War II and bring us through the Vietnam Conflict. The residents of the Armed Forces Retirement Home have breathed new life into experiences spanning more than the last ninety years.

The Armed Forces Retirement Home leadership has encouraged and supported the efforts of a group of volunteers, the Double Nickels Theatre Company, to collect the stories of the residents as well as to record and publish the stories. “Songs for the Unsung” celebrates the legacy of our most senior veterans by creating theater from their memories and transforming their work into an opera performance. This program also reinvigorates the art of communication across generations and cultures. It is another way that the residents of the Armed Forces Retirement Home are reaching out to their family, friends, and neighbors in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area and welcoming them to their home.

Double Nickels, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) reminiscence theater company with a vision towards connecting members of the senior population to the larger community through the power of theater, while harnessing the rich stories of their well-lived lives. The Double Nickels Theatre Company was founded in 2006 by Antoinette Ford as a way of encouraging seniors to stay actively involved with their communities, youth and people of differing cultures and backgrounds.

The Double Nickels Theatre Company created “Soldier’s Speak,” an exciting new oral history project which records and preserves the stories of the veterans living in Washington’s Armed Forces Retirement Home. “Soldier’s Speak” was made possible in part by a grant from the Humanities Council. Learn more: www.doublenickels.org
